Posted in Press on September 29th, 2009 by Jerod
FOXBORO – Tully Banta-Cain [stats] doesn’t mind taking on the burden for him and his fellow defensive linemen.
Banta-Cain knows the Patriots [team stats] must be able to pressure a quarterback with four players. And if coach Bill Belichick decides to dial up a blitz, that’s an added bonus.
“If we have to blitz, great,” said Banta-Cain, who leads with two sacks. “But we take a lot of pride in knowing we’re one of the better D-lines in the league. The onus is always on us to try to maintain that. Hopefully that four-man rush is all we need.”
In two games, the Pats have six sacks, which is tied for seventh in the NFL. Much of it has come in pass defense looks with players such as Banta-Cain, Mike Wright, Derrick Burgess and Ty Warren [stats] rushing the passer.

No more big wedges on kickoffs as NFL alters rule
Posted in Press on September 18th, 2009 by JerodThe 250-pound linebacker for the New England Patriots has done that many times and knows the pain of taking on the wedge.
“I’ve had my bell rung,” Banta-Cain said. “I’ve gotten up after a big collision and been like, ” ‘Wooo, shake it off.’ ”
This season, he and others in his dangerous position are getting help. The NFL is limiting the width of the wedge to help avoid such high-speed contact that can lead to concussions, broken bones and other injuries.
No longer can huge players form three- or four-man wedges, sometimes linking hands or arms, then head upfield and knock down potential tacklers like so many bowling pins. Now wedges can consist of no more than two men together, with the next closest player beside them at least 2 yards away.
